Multiple ways Hansi Flick can use Bernardo Silva at Barcelona

For years, Bernardo Silva to Barcelona felt like one of those transfer stories that kept repeating itself every summer transfer window.
A player who looked built to wear Blaugrana at some point in his career, Barcelona’s financial situation and the player’s own ambitions kept stopping the transfer from happening.
Just when everyone thought they had heard the last of the Barcelona-Silva links, the door has opened in a way it rarely was before.
Bernardo Silva’s contract at Manchester City expired at the end of the 2025/26 season, and it does look like Hansi Flick has given his green light to bring him to Barcelona.

The most natural way to understand Bernardo’s role is as a high-level midfield rotational option. Not as a replacement for Pedri, but as a player who can protect him.
Barcelona have long struggled to manage Pedri’s workload without losing control between the lines. The Canary Islander has been the one profile in the squad they just do not have a replacement for.
Bernardo offers exactly that: pausa, technique, press resistance and recovery in a possession-heavy system.
For years, Man City built their football around Bernardo, and Barcelona have done the same with Pedri. Having them both together gives Hansi Flick a luxury.
The two are not similar players, but can play in a similar role. Pedri’s body tends to let him down often, but having Bernardo to rotate with him can help Flick protect the young Spaniard.
The 2025/26 season saw Barcelona sign Roony Bardghji as the right-wing backup for Lamine Yamal. The Swede impressed in patches but found game time hard to come by.
At his age, Roony needs regular game time, and that is not going to happen when the player in front of him in the pecking order is Lamine.
Thus, Barcelona could look to move the youngster on this summer and would need a player to provide backup to their No. 10. Enter Bernardo.

The Man City captain’s value does not end in midfield. On the right, Bernardo could offer a different profile to Lamine Yamal. Not as explosive, not as naturally decisive in one-vs-one situations, but calmer, more associative and capable of helping Barca control matches.
In Europe, that could be particularly useful. Flick’s Barcelona want intensity, but also control to see out games. Bernardo is an expert at doing just that.
There is also the option of using him as a central attacking midfielder, especially in matches where Barca need an extra passer behind the striker. However, Fermin and Olmo firmly have their names etched in that position.
Bernardo does not solve one big problem for Barcelona. He solves multiple small problems, all at once.
He is a dream player to have in any squad. He will leave everything on the pitch, irrespective of the position he plays in.
Bernardo will not arrive in Barcelona to be the star. He will arrive like Katherine Heigl did in the penultimate season of an already successful Suits show and still find a way to add value to it. That is exactly what Flick needs at this point.
