Thomas Tuchel says Myles Lewis-Skelly is likely to be left out of England squads later this season if he continues not to start for Arsenal.
Lewis-Skelly scored on his debut in Tuchel’s first game in charge, the 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Albania at Wembley in March.
But after a breakout campaign last term, the left-back has failed to start any of Arsenal’s Premier League games so far this season, with Riccardo Calafiori preferred.
Lewis-Skelly’s only starts of the season have come against Port Vale in the Carabao Cup and in Wednesday’s 2-0 Champions League win over Olympiacos.
Asked whether it will be difficult for Lewis-Skelly to stay in the England squads without regular starts, head coach Tuchel admitted: “It maybe becomes a problem for him, yes.
“To just be a good citizen in camp will not be enough over the course of a year. He was a very good player in camp, a very good team-mate in camp. But to just be a good team-mate can maybe not be enough to stay the whole year with us.
“Of course, you have to perform at club level on a regular basis. At the moment, in the last camp he got the credit that I was convinced we have to take care of him and nominate him, because we accelerated his career.”
Tuchel added: “It was our responsibility to call him into the camp in the first place at the end of last season. He was now part of a very successful camp, so he gets the reward. But, as you remember, he was not part of the 20-man squad in Serbia.
“Still, his behaviour was outstanding even if he was not part of the squad. His training attitude, his attitude to push and support the guys who were on the pitch was outstanding and on the highest level. He is maybe one of the players who benefits from this decision to stick with the same squad.
“But the performance will also be a key factor in the next month. He also benefits from the proximity of the camps that it’s only three weeks ago.”
