The season ahead could be one for the ages, with the likes of Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday, who are now under new ownership, coming down to the third tier following relegation.

With the likes of Luton Town, Plymouth Argyle, Huddersfield Town, Stockport County and Bradford City also in the mix, it's set to be a highly competitive battle at the top of the division.

There are plenty of underdogs too, who will be looking to spring a surprise. As we saw with Lincoln City last season, a team that isn't in the promotion conversation before a ball is kicked can always upset the odds.

Now, League One could be set to become even more competitive as a fresh report has suggested one lucky club could be set for a game-changing takeover.

Some of the financial power on show in League One is staggering, with smaller clubs such as Wycombe Wanderers even having an owner with a 10-digit net worth.

Over the past few years, the third tier has seen some unfathomable spending from some of its clubs, the most notable example being Jay Stansfield's £15m move to Birmingham City just under two years ago.

This seems to have set a trend, with plenty of clubs forking out massive fees to sign players in the third tier, and according to a fresh report, a new ownership group could be set to fly in and take a mystery League One team by storm.

That's according to journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon page on Sunday morning, as he suggested that an unnamed League One club is set for a takeover led by an ex-Premier League player who has big connections in the agency world.

This club in question is reportedly available for cheap and could be quickly snapped up by the prospective buyer, as they look to make their new acquisition a major producer of local players.

Nixon also suggested that the takeover may not be completed until September, which is after the summer transfer window, but a B-Team setup would be installed to help overlooked young talent.

A former Premier League star is reportedly at the helm of the takeover bid, and they are set to bring a wealth of contacts from across the game to help their new project.

Nixon also said that the EFL wants to know where the funding is coming from, but sources state that their funding is legitimate and will pass the tests.

Who could the mystery League One club be?

Nixon dropped a few hints as to who the mystery League One club set for this exciting takeover might be, but nothing concrete, leaving fans to speculate whether their club will be the lucky receiver of a timely takeover.

Clubs such as Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield, Wycombe, MK Dons, Luton, Reading and Oxford can pretty much be ruled out, given their current owners seemingly have no interest in selling.

However, two clubs which are rumoured to be available for sale are Bradford and Wigan Athletic, and both of these would make total sense given the information Nixon provided.

Both teams have a large catchment area and plenty of bigger local rivals who could overlook young talent, which is one of the key areas the prospective new owners are looking to take advantage of.

It will be interesting to see how this develops in the coming weeks, and whether we get a clear indication of whom the mystery League One club might be.
