Villarreal CF fell to Getafe CF in a tightly contested and highly physical encounter, where Georges Mikautadze’s goal was not enough to earn a point.

Villarreal CF suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Getafe CF in a match marked by constant interruptions and intense physical battles. The Yellow Submarine, who pulled one back in the second half through Georges Mikautadze, were unable to complete the comeback after conceding twice to the Madrid side.

The game got off to a scrappy start for both teams, with frequent stoppages and very few clear-cut chances. Villarreal struggled to impose their usual vertical style, as the hosts applied intense pressure after losing possession and remained alert in their defensive cover.

The first opportunity for Marcelino García Toral’s side — in what marked his 200th top-flight match in charge of Villarreal — came in the 32nd minute through a shot from Hugo López. However, the effort was ruled out due to a prior offside in the build-up from Oluwaseyi. The deadlock was broken in the 37th minute when the referee awarded a penalty for a foul by Renato Veiga on Vázquez. Arambarri converted from the spot to give Getafe the lead at half-time (1-0).

After the break, the Yellow Submarine attempted to step up and level the contest. However, in the 53rd minute, the hosts struck again through Martín Satriano to double their advantage (2-0).

Marcelino responded by making changes from the bench, introducing Mikautadze and Santi Comesaña in search of a reaction. The breakthrough for Villarreal came in the 75th minute when Georges Mikautadze latched onto a loose ball inside the box, cut inside with great skill and finished clinically to make it 2-1.

Despite sustained pressure in the closing stages against a side intent on slowing the tempo as much as possible, Villarreal were unable to find an equaliser, and the scoreline remained unchanged.
