Easington Colliery have signed former Sunderland academy forward Nathan Greenwood, who steps up to Northern League Division One.
According to Sunderland Echo, the 25-year-old joined the Academy of Light from Seaham Red Star in summer 2019, featured alongside Dan Neil, Anthony Patterson and Bali Mumba for around 10 months, then returned to Red Star in July 2020 after his contract expired, later turning out for Whickham, Consett, West Auckland Town and Shildon.
He spent last season with Northern League Division Two side Chester-le-Street Town and has now agreed a move to Easington earlier this week, taking him back into Division One.
Manager Olly Hotchkiss expressed delight at the deal and said he had long admired Greenwood during his time at Shildon. He praised the forward’s sharp start in training and believes he is ready to make an immediate impact, highlighting his leadership in pre-season running drills and the standards he sets. Hotchkiss added that Easington beat strong competition for the signing, which he felt showed Greenwood’s belief in the club’s project.
There is another arrival at Welfare Park, with Joe Walton, the former Morpeth Town and Hebburn Town winger, accepting a player-coach role. Walton, who spent time in charge of Sunderland West End last season, will join Hotchkiss’s staff while remaining part of the playing squad for the new campaign.
