Nathan Redmond's reaction to the release of Birmingham City's 150th anniversary shirt has set tongues wagging about a potential return to St Andrews.

Former Birmingham City player Nathan Redmond's reaction to the release of the club's 150th anniversary shirt seems likely to rekindle the possibility of him returning to St Andrew's this summer.

Redmond is a free agent after having been released by Burnley at the end of the 2024-25 season.

The Clarets have now been promoted back to the Premier League, but the winger was deemed surplus to requirements at Turf Moor upon the completion of his contract and is looking for a new club.

Birmingham, meanwhile, finished the 2024-25 season with a record-breaking 111 points in League One and a spot back in the Championship, and with their ambitious plans for a new stadium starting to come to fruition, it doesn't seem that they'll be wanting to hang around in the Championship for long.

Nathan Redmond's Instagram is reigniting talk of an emotional return to Birmingham

Birmingham have posted their 150th anniversary shirt to Instagram, and Redmond's reaction to it - a flame emoji - only seems likely to increase speculation that the 31-year-old could be set for a return to St Andrew's.

The possibility of this happening isn't anything new. Despite an injury-plagued two seasons since he joined Burnley from Besiktas in 2023, there was considerable conjecture around the time of the January transfer window that he could be set to return to his first club.

It didn't happen during that window, but the end of his contract with Burnley and his release from Turf Moor reopens the possibility of an emotional return to St. Andrew's this summer.

With the imminent return of another ex-Blues winger in the form of Demarai Gray though, there may be no room for the experienced wide player at the club, and his chance to return to the Midlands may have already passed.

Nathan Redmond was a Premier League mainstay, but injuries have hampered his last two years

Nathan Redmond started his career at St Andrew's. A product of their academy system, he made his debut for them in a League Cup match against Rochdale in August 2010, becoming their second-youngest ever player in the process, after Trevor Francis.

He didn't make his League debut for the Blues until a year later, and over the next two seasons he would make 62 League appearances for them before leaving for Norwich City for a fee reported to be £2 million plus another £1.2 million in add-ons.

Redmond would spend nine of the next ten years as a mainstay in the Premier League, with nine of his next ten seasons coming in England's top flight, first with Norwich and then with Southampton, who he joined for a reported £10 million in 2018.

He left the club in 2022 to sign for Besiktas, and following a season in Turkey returned to England to join a Burnley side that had just been promoted into the Premier League.

But the last two seasons haven't been happy ones for Redmond. A series of injuries kept him out of contention for a place in the Burnley team, and he only made 14 League appearances for the Clarets over his two years with the club.

Birmingham fans will be wondering whether this one simple emoji could be a hint towards a return to the hometown club at which he started his career.
