Jonas Urbig once again drew attention to himself against Wolfsburg. After receiving praise from Lothar Matthäus, the Bayern keeper now spoke about the national team.

Jonas Urbig came to the fore in FC Bayern’s 1-0 win at VfL Wolfsburg. The 22-year-old replaced Manuel Neuer and saved Munich from going behind with several strong saves. The goalkeeper was one of Bayern’s most eye-catching players, particularly in the first half, while the record champions were hardly effective in attack for long periods.

Lothar Matthäus was also impressed. The Sky pundit said at half-time: „Urbig is playing a world-class game. I hope Julian Nagelsmann is watching. The third goalkeeper (for the World Cup; editor’s note) is still missing.“ Matthäus thus brought the young keeper back into focus for the national team. Urbig had already been nominated for the DFB squad, but had to withdraw due to injury.

Urbig himself reacted calmly to the record-breaking international’s comments after the match. The 22-year-old explained: „First of all, I’m pleased that Lothar has a positive opinion of me. I train hard every day and take it day by day and week by week.“ Despite the celebrity praise, there was no sign of any great euphoria from the Bayern goalkeeper.

Urbig: „After that, I’ll think about the national team“

Instead, Urbig turned his attention directly back to the upcoming tasks with FC Bayern. The record champions still have a home game in the Bundesliga and the DFB Cup final on the agenda in the coming weeks. Urbig continued: „Now we still have a home game in the league and the DFB Cup final, unfortunately not the Champions League final. After that, I’ll think about the national team.“

Bayern struggled for a long time before Michael Olise scored after the break to make it 1-0. The Frenchman made a strong run down the right flank, moved into the middle and scored into the far corner.

Wolfsburg had a great chance to equalize shortly before the end, but Svanberg only hit the post in the 89th minute. Urbig did not concede a goal, sending out a clear sporting signal – and not just because of the praise from Matthäus.
