The Government of Navarra’s first vice president and councillor for Presidency and Equality, Javier Remírez, has said Athletic’s new shirt does not breach or misuse Navarra’s official symbols, after UPN, PP and Vox questioned it. The design features a map of Euskal Herria including Navarra and is for next season. As reported by as.com, UPN has warned the club it will go to court if the map is not removed.

In a post on X, Remírez noted that both the Lorafna and the Ley Foral 4/2020 on Navarra’s symbols define the Community’s exclusive identity emblems as the flag, the coat of arms and the anthem. He said the legal protection set out in the law is limited to those official symbols under article three.

On that basis, he argued the Bilbao club’s shirt does not compromise or misuse Navarra’s official emblems, since the elements shown differ from those expressly covered by regional legislation. He also underlined that Athletic Club is a private association, not a public administration or a body dependent on one.

He said the use of non-official symbols by a private entity falls outside the remit and competence of the Government of Navarra.

Even so, Remírez stressed that the regional executive upholds and asserts its official symbols as a reflection of Navarra’s own and distinct institutional identity.
