Palmeiras’ bid for Danilo has been complicated by advanced talks to sell defender Naves to Necaxa of Mexico. Losing Naves removes the initial makeweight, but the pursuit remains alive.
According to Globo.com, Palmeiras first proposed R$ 120 million plus Naves, a package valued at about R$ 135 million. That offer was made before the World Cup and drew no reply, and there has been no fresh contact since.
People close to the player say no financial proposal currently satisfies both Danilo and Botafogo. Before the tournament, Botafogo hoped for around €40 million, a figure Palmeiras views as unworkable, and limited minutes for the midfielder have tempered that expectation.
In the view of those around the player, a mix of fixed fees and add-ons totalling €30 million to €35 million could persuade Botafogo.
If Naves is sold, Palmeiras would generate funds to raise their bid, though the club considers going above €30 million difficult. The club is waiting on European market movements and leans on a good relationship with the player.
The board and Abel Ferreira’s staff have Danilo as their sole target this window to broaden tactical options, and see overseas clubs as the main rivals. Danilo is training during the break and has said he will report back to Botafogo on Monday. Brazil’s transfer window opens on Monday, 20 July, and runs until 11 September.
