Ronald Koeman admitted that Denzel Dumfries deserved a red card in the Netherlands’ 1-1 friendly draw against Ecuador last night.
During the post-match conference via FCInterNews, Koeman discussed the Inter Milan wingback’s expulsion in Eindhoven.
Koeman’s side took an early lead as Paris Saint-Germain center-back Willian Pacho scored an own goal.
However, Denzel Dumfries let his side down in the 12th minute.
Indeed, referee Sascha Stegemann sent off the 29-year-old for a reckless challenge on Gonzalo Plata.
Since the Dutch star was the last man, the German official had no choice but to give him marching orders.
Reduced to ten men, the Oranje lost momentum and finished the game with just two shots on goal.
Meanwhile, Ecuador mustered 17 attempts, generating an impressive 1.73 xG, as Enner Valencia drew the Tricolour level from the spot in the 24th minute.
Still, the veteran striker may have committed a foul on Stefan de Vrij in the lead-up to Dumfries’ expulsion.
Koeman addressed the press after the game.
“I spoke with the referee at the start of the second half,” he said. “I thought there was a foul on Stefan de Vrij, but he didn’t call it. I even told him that.
“Then, of course, a red card can be given. Denzel got the ball on his knee in a really unlucky way. Obviously, the other central defender was running back along the line.”
Furthermore, Koeman confirmed it was a textbook red card.
“If a referee wouldn’t give it, he certainly wouldn’t go to the World Cup to officiate. Seven times out of ten, this is a red card.
“He’s one-on-one with the goalkeeper. I can accept it.”
A lengthy injury layoff seems to be taking its toll on Dumfries, who continues to struggle for form since returning to action.
