Netherlands face Morocco at Estadio Monterrey in the early hours of Tuesday morning in the World Cup last 32, with a place in the round of 16 against Brazil or Japan the prize for the winner.
Ronald Koeman’s side topped Group F with seven points after two wins and a draw, their attacking output one of the group stage’s most impressive. Morocco, whom the Dutch last beat 2–1 in a 2017 friendly, arrive with momentum of their own and a 32-match unbeaten run to protect.
The team news is overwhelmingly positive for Koeman heading into this fixture. Denzel Dumfries and Brian Brobbey had both been reported as carrying minor knocks through the group stage, but the pair have been declared fit and are available to start.
Brobbey keeps his place as the central striker. The Sunderland forward has three goals in two starts at this tournament. His physical presence has been the catalyst for the Netherlands’ attacking fluency since his introduction against Sweden.
The sole change from the Tunisia XI is Micky van de Ven’s return to left back. The Tottenham Hotspur defender dropped to the bench for the group finale but is back in the starting eleven, with Nathan Ake making way. Van de Ven’s pace on the left gives the Netherlands an additional defensive and attacking dimension that Ake does not offer in the same way.
Frenkie de Jong continues in midfield alongside Ryan Gravenberch and Tijjani Reijnders — a three that has provided both defensive cover and creative momentum throughout the group stage.
Denzel Dumfries covers the right, with Donyell Malen and Cody Gakpo on the flanks of the attack. Virgil van Dijk captains the side from centre-back alongside Jan Paul Van Hecke. Bart Verbruggen continues in goal.
Netherlands possible starting XI (4-3-3): Verbruggen; Dumfries, Van Hecke, Van Dijk, Van de Ven; Gravenberch, De Jong, Reijnders; Malen, Brobbey, Gakpo
The match will be broadcast live on ITV1 and ITVX in the UK.
