FC Bayern is currently preparing for the new season, and there are some very exciting personnel developments. Among them is the goalkeeper position. Manuel Neuer has extended his contract by another year, and Jonas Urbig will be his successor once Neuer retires.
That will most likely happen in the summer of 2027, even though Neuer has left himself a back door open.
Urbig, as has been widely reported recently, is definitely set to play in several matches for FC Bayern this upcoming season and will also take the field in key games. Vincent Kompany did not deny this, but recently stated that Neuer is slated to be the number one goalkeeper, without going into further detail.
In the wake of the Telekom Cup match against RB Leipzig, which FC Bayern won 3-1, Vincent Kompany also addressed the goalkeeper situation.
“It’s always a topic of discussion, of course. I can’t influence what’s being said outside the club. And I don’t read that stuff either. We’ve communicated very clearly with both of them—internal communication is important,” said Kompany.

The Bayern coach then reiterated that there is a clear division of roles: “Jonas will get his minutes, including this season. That’s important for his development. Manu is our number one—that’s a good setup for us. I hope it works out as well as it did last season.”
So the decision on which of the two goalkeepers plays will be made on a case-by-case basis. Neuer needs a few more breaks these days anyway, and he also had to deal with injuries at times last season. So it’s only natural that Urbig plays every now and then.
However, there doesn’t seem to be any agreement regarding a specific number of games.
