New signings score on their debuts – BVB wins first preseason match

Under the motto “Youth Researches,” BVB head coach Niko Kovac fielded his team at the Niederrhein Stadium in Oberhausen. All of Dortmund’s World Cup players are still on vacation, and captain Emre Can will be sidelined for months anyway following his cruciate ligament tear.

As a result, Jan-Luca Riedl, a 17-year-old defender from BVB’s U19 team, started right away, and the aforementioned midfield gem Justin Lerma—one of the summer signings—also started from the beginning.

In total, seven players in BVB’s starting lineup were 20 years old or younger.

The early stages of the match at Stadion Niederrhein clearly belonged to the home team from Oberhausen. RWO played with spirit, repeatedly pressing high up the field against Dortmund’s back three of Jan-Luca Riedl, Filippo Mane, and Luca Reggiani.

The young Dortmund team gave the ball away quickly several times while building up play, and one of those turnovers proved costly: In the fifth minute, Oberhausen’s Luca Vincent Schlax reacted sharply, playing a ball he’d won in midfield directly to Timur Kesim, who slotted it neatly into the right corner of the net.

It took BVB over a quarter of an hour to get into the game. Before halftime, the visitors’ pressure grew steadily, but first Fabio Silva and Jobe Bellingham failed to capitalize on a double chance—both were denied by RWO goalkeeper Ryan Valentine, just as Luca Reggiani had been moments earlier with a header.

Shortly before halftime, the ball fell to Justin Lerma’s feet in the penalty area. After a blocked shot by Albert, the debutant from Ecuador reacted quickest and finished from a tight angle to tie the game.

BVB Makes Eleven Substitutions at Halftime

After this meager halftime score, the Borussians pushed hard for a quick lead in the second half. BVB head coach Niko Kovac replaced the entire team, bringing in additional new signings Takato Yamamoto and Joane Gadou. Additionally, 16-year-old Marwan Mirza made his debut for the BVB First team at right back.

The goal that made it 2-1 in the 55th minute was a top-priority play! After 17-year-old Enzo Duarte (also from the club’s own youth academy) held his ground against several defenders, Serhou Guirassy got on the end of the ball in the penalty area. Dortmund’s top scorer didn’t hesitate, blasting the ball into the near corner from 13 meters out.

Ten minutes later, the Guinean had a chance to score BVB’s third goal, but RWO goalkeeper Valentine once again made a superb save.

While the Regionalliga side’s energy levels noticeably waned in front of 7,359 spectators, Dortmund continued to push the pace. Dortmund’s third goal was scored in the 78th minute by another debutant, Takato Yamamoto. The 18-year-old Japanese player had stepped onto the BVB training field for the first time this week and was rightly celebrated for his debut goal.

BVB had further scoring chances in the closing minutes, but in the end, the score remained 3-1 in favor of the German runners-up. It was a result that even the Oberhausen fourth-division side, led by head coach Sebastian Gunkel, was more than happy with.

The match at Rot-Weiß Oberhausen was the first of a total of five away friendly matches for BVB before the big season opener at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK on August 15, featuring a tough test against AS Roma (5:30 p.m.). Tickets for this Black and Yellow celebration are available here in the online ticket shop.
