The 42-year-old took over at the Riverside Stadium this summer and has had an immediate impact on Boro’s performances, transforming them into one of the Championship’s most competitive outfits.

Sitting second in the table after 13 matches, Edwards’ side have picked up points on 11 occasions thus far and only trail league leaders Coventry City by three points.

The Welsh coach has somewhat restored his reputation in the EFL, after being dismissed by Luton Town last season en route to a disappointing relegation to League One, just a year after suffering the same fate in the Premier League.

Naturally, this upturn in form has attracted the attention of other teams across the country, including those competing in the top-flight.

After a dismal start to the 2025/25 Premier League campaign, which saw Wolves pick up two points from their opening 10 matches, manager Pereira was relieved of his duties at Molineux.

Thus began a hunt to find his successor, which looked to be in the form of a return for Gary O’Neill. However, he decided it wasn’t the right time to take charge of Wolves again and the search went on.

According to the Telegraph, Edwards is now the Black Country outfit’s preferred candidate to take over and guide them out of the Premier League relegation zone.

The report does state that Boro’s boss is unlikely to leave the club he just joined in the summer, but interest in his services certainly isn’t what anybody in Middlesbrough will want to hear.

Edwards operated out of Molineux during his playing days, making 100 league appearances for Wolves during 2004 and 2008.

He returned to the club during the early stages of his coaching career, where he held various roles in their youth system.

Middlesbrough will hope Wolves connection doesn’t tempt Rob Edwards into a move

Given how well Boro have started this season, it seems unlikely that Edwards will want to throw away a potential promotion charge for a certain relegation scrap in the top-flight.

The 42-year-old has already experienced how hard it is to remain in the Premier League when starting on level footing, never mind when the club he would be managing already have an eight-point gap to safety.

Edwards’ previous connection to Wolves could prove to be the only tempting factor, with the romantic nature of a move potentially appealing.
