Alexander Isak is currently away with the rest of the Newcastle United squad, a training camp in Austria before they return to the UK and play Celtic on Saturday.

However, the Sweden international found himself back in the headlines on Tuesday.

David Ornstein of The Athletic reporting; ‘Liverpool have made an approach to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United. The Merseyside club say no formal offer has been submitted as they are well aware Newcastle’s stance has always been that Isak is not for sale. However, they have communicated their interest to do a deal in the region of £120million.’

This exclusive from Ornstein, swiftly followed on from news earlier yesterday, that Newcastle United had seen their opening offer of £69.5m (€80m) turned down by Eintracht Frankfurt for Hugo Ekitike.

All of the more reliable NUFC media confirming that the intention of Eddie Howe and Newcastle United is to sign Hugo Ekitike to play WITH Alexander Isak, not to be his replacement.

Matthew Raisbeck covers NUFC for BBC Newcastle and he summed up what the reality is; “The message is still that Isak is not for sale. Newcastle United are determined to keep Alexander Isak and don’t need to sell for financial reasons.”

Newcastle United have gone through a tough couple of years to vastly improve their PSR position.

Not a single new first team contender brought in these last three transfer windows, whilst at the same time selling the likes of Anderson, Minteh, Almiron and Kelly.

This is why, as Raisbeck points out, Newcastle United can now afford to buy Hugo Ekitike AND keep Alexander Isak.

BBC Newcastle’s Matthew Raisbeck reporting on the Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak situation – 15 July 2025:

“It is not a given that Hugo Ekitike will play second fiddle to Isak, in fact there is a hope that they could play together.

“Newcastle United like versatility.

“They tried to sign Chelsea’s Joao Pedro this summer, who is another versatile striker.

“I don’t expect them to switch formation for the first game of the season but this move [for Ekitike] would allow a greater scope to change tactics throughout the game.

“The message is still that Isak is not for sale.

“Newcastle United are determined to keep Alexander Isak and don’t need to sell for financial reasons.

“They are in the Champions League next season and want to be competitive in the league and all the cups so, even before Callum Wilson left, they were always going to need another striker.

“Ekitike has the profile they want and allows the team to be so much more flexible tactically.
