Newcastle United have reignited their pursuit of FC Porto midfielder Victor Froholdt, according to Correio da Manha.
The Magpies have placed the ‘fantastic‘ Danish international at the top of their target list as club captain Bruno Guimaraes edges closer to a high-profile exit from St James’ Park.
With Arsenal actively working to finalise a deal for Guimaraes, Newcastle need an elite replacement.
Having already lost Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur this summer, the Magpies cannot afford to enter the new Premier League campaign short on options in midfield.
Renowned across Europe for his tireless box-to-box work rate and exceptional ball-carrying ability, Froholdt has received glowing reviews from scouts.
Newcastle have tracked the young Dane for a while now, but signing him will require significant negotiations.
Porto hold strong leverage, with Froholdt under contract until 2030. They have initially directed suitors towards his €85 million release clause.
If Guimaraes completes his anticipated move to the Gunners, Newcastle are prepared to act swiftly to avoid a bidding war.
Arsenal and Bayern Munich are also keeping tabs on the player’s development.
Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Larsson and Botafogo’s Danilo are under consideration, but Froholdt appears to be the preferred candidate to lead the next evolution of their midfield.
