Newcastle United claimed a 2-1 win over Manchester City at St James’ Park thanks to a double from Harvey Barnes.
The Magpies were desperate to end a run of successive league losses and got the job done against dangerous opposition.
Newcastle came prepared to end their abysmal run against Pep Guardiola’s side. They took the bull by the horns to earn three crucial points and climb up to 14th.
Several Newcastle players put in terrific performances across the board, but Malick Thiaw at the back was one of the standouts for NUFC.
Thiaw won 100% of his tackles (a brilliant last man challenge), made one interception, six recoveries, seven clearances, and blocked one shot.
He also came out on top in 2/4 duels.
Thiaw took to Instagram to make a post about the game, saying, “Big Night, Big Fight, Big Result at St James’ Park.
NUFC teammate Nick Woltemade responded “quality” to the post, recognising his teammate’s role in the win.
Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes equally enthused, “What a player”.
Thiaw played a crucial role in the win and will be excited to see his teammates acknowledge his part.
Newcastle now need to treat this performance as a springboard for what is about to become a brutal run of fixtures.
Everton, Marseille, Tottenham Hotspur, Burnley, Bayer Leverkusen, arch-rivals Sunderland, and four more games all land within the next month.
The schedule will test Eddie Howe’s squad depth, resilience, and mentality.
This win over Manchester City wasn’t just three points. It was a statement that Newcastle can still dig deep and deliver when the pressure is at its heaviest.
Momentum has been missing during their recent slump, but this result provides exactly the injection of belief they needed.
The defensive grit shown by Thiaw, the clinical edge from Barnes, and the collective intensity across the pitch must now become the standard.
If Newcastle can bottle the courage and composure they displayed at St James’ Park, this victory could become the catalyst that turns their season around.
