Arsenal were thought to have considered a late move for midfield star
Eddie Howe has insisted that Sandro Tonali is not for sale amid rumoured transfer interest from Arsenal.
A story from Sky Germany early on Deadline Day suggested that the Gunners were considering a move for the Italian, with The Athletic later reporting that an agent had offered the north London club the chance to open talks with Newcastle.
Arsenal were thought to be assessing the transfer market for opportunities should one arise, with midfielder Mikel Merino ruled out for an extended spell after the Spaniard needed surgery on a broken bone in his foot.
Tonali’s agent clarified later on Monday that there was no chance that the midfielder would leave St James’ Park, and Howe reiterated that ahead of the Magpies’ Carabao Cup semi-final second leg with Manchester City on Wednesday.
“There’s certainly no intention from our side to lose Sandro at all,” the Newcastle boss said.
“He’s such an integral player to what we're doing. I think he’s very happy here. He loves playing for Newcastle and loves representing the city.”
Asked if the swirling rumours had unsettled Tonali, Howe replied: “I don’t think so, but lots of things happen without my knowledge.
“As far as I’m aware we have an outstanding person and player and he seems really happy within himself with a great relationship with me and his teammates. So that would surprise me.

“As one of our best players he’s always going to be attracting glances; that’s the reality of football. All encompassed, I don’t see an issue but I’m not in control of everything.
“Sandro is absolutely fine, I had a discussion with him yesterday.
“He’s focused on the here and the now, and playing for us. Talking to him yesterday his only focus was Man City and trying to win that game.
“He’s happy and committed. There’s absolutely no issue with Sandro himself.”
Tonali has played 34 games in all competitions for the Toon this term, having joined from AC Milan in 2023.
He served a 10-month ban from football for breaching betting rules, and that ended in August 2024.
The 25-year-old returned to play 36 Premier League games in the 2024-25 campaign, scoring four goals.
