Newcastle United supporters have voiced frustration after the Premier League confirmed Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby officials at St James’ Park, Sunderland Echo reports. Anthony Taylor referees, assistants Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn, fourth official Andy Madley, VAR Paul Howard with Sian Massey-Ellis.
Beswick’s inclusion has drawn ire after February’s FA Cup tie at Aston Villa. Tammy Abraham’s 14th-minute opener appeared offside but stood with no VAR, Lucas Digne avoided a red for a late tackle on Jacob Murphy, and a handball brought only a free-kick. Newcastle won 3-1.
Taylor also oversaw Sunderland’s 2-1 league win over Brentford on 30 August 2025, awarding two penalties, and their FA Cup defeat to Port Vale. His selection will be closely watched.
Régis Le Bris says Sunderland are struggling with injuries after the 1-0 defeat to Brighton, decided by former Newcastle winger Yankuba Minteh. He said Wilson Isidor could not be used and staff were cautious with Brian Brobbey due to workload.
Robin Roefs and Nordi Mukiele missed that match but could return, and Reinildo Mandava is expected to train this week. Le Bris added Dan Ballard has hamstring discomfort, Enzo Le Fée might be ready, Nilson Angulo faces four to six weeks out, and Mukiele’s risk will be managed.
Newcastle injuries include Bruno Guimarães, who will miss the derby despite travelling to Barcelona and is expected back after the international break. Fabian Schär is sidelined until April, Emil Krafth is out for the season, Lewis Miley is a doubt, and Sandro Tonali and Joseph Willock are being assessed.
