Newcastle United have once again missed out on a top target, with Aston Villa now finalising a deal to sign Johan Manzambi.

The Magpies looked set to land the Switzerland midfielder before their Premier League rivals moved ahead of them in the race for his signature.

Newcastle will now have to turn to other options in their search for a box-to-box playmaker to add to their ranks.

The Geordies should consider a move for Bayer Leverkusen ace Ibrahim Maza, who recorded five goals and seven assists in 44 appearances in his debut campaign.

The Algerian star has caught the eye in the Bundesliga, where he bagged three goals and created eight big chances. He has been ‘a joy to watch‘.

He carried that form to the 2026 World Cup and looked mesmerising on the grandest stage.

Maza would be a fantastic option in the middle of the park for Newcastle alongside Bruno Guimaraes and a number six.

The 20-year-old is a terrific prospect with remarkable upside, and should be on the Tyneside outfit’s radar.

However, his German club will likely demand an arm and a leg for his services, given that his contract runs until 2030.

Still, Newcastle should be all over him if the opportunity to sign him arises. He is a ‘special talent‘.

If Newcastle decide that a move for Maza is too expensive, they should also keep a close eye on Curtis Jones’ situation at Liverpool.

Reports suggest the England international is open to leaving this summer in search of regular first-team football after struggling for consistent starts.

At 25, Jones has the technical quality, energy and tactical intelligence to thrive in Eddie Howe’s system.

He can carry the ball through midfield, press aggressively and contribute in the final third, making him an ideal box-to-box option.

With Premier League experience and plenty left to prove, Jones could prove to be an outstanding addition to Newcastle’s midfield.
