Newcastle United have opened talks with defender Lewis Hall over a new contract.

According to Sam C, the Magpies are keen to tie Hall down to a new long-term contract with improved terms as they look to fend off interest from Premier League rivals.

Newcastle have already been picked apart this summer. They have lost Sandro Tonali and captain Bruno Guimaraes and are in no mood to lose yet another key player.

The Magpies are going through a period of change this summer, with Eddie Howe’s exit standing as arguably the biggest departure from the club.

Newcastle have since appointed Matthias Jassle as Howe’s successor and are working on bringing in reinforcements to bolster the squad.

Nevertheless, losing that many key players and a long-standing manager already puts the club in a precarious position heading into the new season.

Hall was one of those also earmarked to leave S. James’ Park this summer, but Newcastle have moved quickly to block any potential exit.

The England international was attracting serious attention from Manchester United, who saw him as a perfect successor to club stalwart Luke Shaw.

Unsurprisingly, Hall was open to the move, but Newcastle’s outrageous asking price kept United at bay.

The Magpies reportedly slapped a staggering £75 million price tag on the defender, who cost them £28m from Chelsea in 2024. But United were unwilling to match it.

That difference in opinion gave Newcastle an opening to kick off contract talks, and they are now in the process of convincing Hall to pledge his long-term allegiance.

There’s no guarantee that Hall would commit his future to Newcastle, especially with the dark clouds hanging above the club.

However, the prospect of a new contract may be enough to force United to explore other options.

Hall was a standout player for Newcastle last season. He made 47 appearances last season, contributing a goal and two assists across all competitions.

He also helped to keep three clean sheets, created five big chances and won 57% of his ground duels in the Premier League.
