Newcastle United will demand a British transfer record fee for Alexander Isak in the hope of warding off interest from Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Isak is of interest to several Premier League rivals after another prolific campaign at St James’ Park. The Swedish striker scored his 22nd goal of the season during Newcastle’s extra-time defeat to Brighton in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Newcastle are determined to hold onto the 25-year-old and are preparing a lucrative new contract to extend his deal beyond 2028. However, Isak’s interest in recommitting his future to the club could hinge on Champions League qualification.

On Friday, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said it was frustrating to ‘constantly’ talk about his players being linked with other clubs.

“I think it goes without saying, it is frustrating for us that we are constantly talking about players and rumours of them leaving,” he said at his pre-match press conference.

“We want to go the other way, we want to go the other way and strengthen the group. We want to make our team and squad stronger for the future rather than lose our best players.”

Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are all monitoring the player’s situation, should Isak indicate he is open to leaving Newcastle in the summer.

However, Spanish outlet Fichajes are reporting that the Magpies will demand a British transfer record fee for the forward. The club’s asking price in excess of £120m is likely to end Barcelona’s interest in the Swede, while it could prove a figure out of reach for English suitors.

Isak has scored 57 goals in 98 appearances for Newcastle since arriving from Real Sociedad in 2022. Last season, he became the first Newcastle player since Alan Shearer to score 20+ league goals in a top-flight campaign. He has 19 goals in the Premier League this season, behind only Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland in the race for the Golden Boot.
