Newcastle United won a domestic trophy last season and secured Champions League qualification.
They were expected to build on it and do well this season. So far, things have not gone according to plan for Newcastle and Eddie Howe.
According to reports via Express, the club hierarchy will conduct a significant performance review at the end of the season and decide the manager’s and his coaching staff’s futures. Newcastle have not been at their best this season, and the new signings have failed to deliver. It remains to be seen whether the manager can hold onto his job beyond this season.
Newcastle have recently suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Barcelona, and they were also beaten by Sunderland in the derby. The derby defeat has particularly demoralised the fanbase, and it remains to be seen if Newcastle can bounce back strongly.
Howe said: “The rules have made it very difficult to have momentum to go with the speed it (the club) initially went with. “I don’t know a way we can beat that system. We have to follow the rules that are set, the club desperately want to be ambitious but there is a limit to what we can spend. “That has a knock-on effect on everything we do. To not recruit for that many windows, I don’t know a team that would not suffer from that. We certainly have, and then losing Alexander Isak last summer was a considerable blow. But again we can’t feel sorry for ourselves and use excuses. “We have to find a way to be successful despite all of those things. But with that there has to be an understanding of the type of conditions we are under.”
Regarding the rumours surrounding his future, the manager has insisted that he remains focused on the task at hand, and he will not walk away from the post by resigning.
It seems that it will be up to the owners to decide his future after the season. There is no doubt that he is a quality manager who has underperformed in recent months. It remains to be seen whether they are prepared to stick with him beyond this season.
