Newcastle ‘to move for’ José Mourinho this summer | OneFootball

talkSPORT reports that Newcastle are monitoring José Mourinho and could make a summer approach for the Benfica head coach. The 63-year-old’s future has been widely discussed in recent weeks.

The report adds that the Premier League’s nouveau riche are tracking his contract position and plan an approach if Eddie Howe were to leave at the end of the season, with Mourinho said to be high on their list.

Mourinho may face competition for the role, as Newcastle are also keeping tabs on Andoni Iraiola. Bournemouth have in recent days announced Iraiola will depart at the end of the current campaign, leaving the Spaniard free to sign elsewhere.

Mourinho is a familiar figure in England after his celebrated spells at Chelsea, where he won the bulk of his honours, and subsequent jobs at Manchester United after Sir Alex Ferguson and at Tottenham.

He is under contract at Benfica until summer 2027 and has repeatedly said he wants to remain at the Estádio da Luz, urging the club to push through a renewal. In recent days, former president Manuel Damásio has advised Rui Costa not to grant the Special One’s request.
