Newcastle United are interested in signing Marseille midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, according to French outlet Foot Mercato.

The Magpies need to strengthen their midfield options after Bruno Guimaraes joined Arsenal.

Hojbjerg fits the bill having made 254 Premier League appearances during his time in England.

The former Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur star has played 75 games for Marseille since moving to France, and a return to the Premier League could appeal to him.

The 31-year-old is on the Magpies’ shortlist, but they have other options.

Hojbjerg proved his quality in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, FC Augsburg and Schalke 04 before moving to England.

He could be a good option replace Guimaraes given his wealth of experience.

The Dane could be available for around £20 million having joined Marseille for around £17m.
