Graeme Bailey told TBR Football that Marc Casado is a name that is gaining attention for 2026 and that Newcastle United need an extra option in midfield. The report also pointed out that it remains to be seen if he will be available in the near future, but if he is, Newcastle will certainly be among the options.

This situation is interesting because Newcastle United have made some bold decisions in their transfer market in recent times. The Magpies agreed on a record-breaking deal with Liverpool for Alexander Isak, and that agreement clearly showed the club’s ambition.

Casado’s name coming up now shows that the club is constantly looking at new targets. However, the problem is that the Spaniard is a vital part of FC Barcelona, and he has a contract until 2028, with a release clause of €100 million. Such a big deal does not seem practical for Newcastle right now, especially when they need to invest in other positions as well.

Focusing on wingers and strikers should be their priority. Lewis Miley is performing well, and Newcastle do not seem to be in a mood to fill that position immediately after Sandro Tonali’s return. Therefore, a big move in January seems unlikely.

Is Casado really the right choice for Newcastle United?

Now the question is how much bringing the 21-year-old in means to Newcastle. Their current midfield already has players like Bruno Guimaraes, Tonali and Joelinton, but Casado has different traits and attributes. He is the kind of deep-lying midfielder who can retain possession of the ball, control the pace of the game and maintain the balance of the team with accurate passing.

His defensive understanding and level of ball recovery are commendable even at a young age. If Newcastle United need more control in midfield against technically strong teams, a player like Casado could be a huge help. However, the question is whether the club really needs to invest more in that role.

Lewis Miley could be a good option for the future, and the squad already looks balanced with Sandro Tonali. Barcelona are in no mood to let him go anyway, and such a huge sum may not be a wise move for Newcastle. If Newcastle are serious about Casado, it would show they want to strengthen their midfield, but at the moment, their real need seems to be elsewhere.

It should also be remembered that Newcastle were interested in Kobbie Mainoo in the summer transfer window, showing they are also keeping an eye on English talent. So Casado could still be in talks in the future, but for now, this deal looks like a pipe dream.
