Newcastle United’s efforts to strengthen their attacking options this January appear to have hit an obstacle, with Real Madrid set to resist any offers for one of their most promising young players. According to Football Insider, Real Madrid remain determined to keep hold of the highly-rated Turkish midfielder, who has recently flourished under Xabi Alonso.

Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track Podcast, a source explained, “I would say it’s probably nearly impossible to sign Arda Guler in January. He’s become more instrumental in the Real Madrid team since the appointment of Xabi Alonso. He’s obviously got the trust of Xabi Alonso.”

That trust has been rewarded in impressive fashion, with the report adding, “He’s been picked ahead of some of the other real big names in that Real Madrid team. And to be fair to Guler, he’s rewarded that faith with three goals and four assists.”
Sources told Football Insider that both Newcastle and Arsenal had been tracking the player closely, but with Madrid unwilling to sanction a sale or even a loan deal, any move now looks unlikely. “So look, Guler’s a top player. He’s shown that for Real Madrid this season and he’s shown that in the past for Turkey. He’s under a long-term contract with Real Madrid,” the source continued.

Madrid’s position appears firm, as the club remains focused on competing across all fronts. “Real Madrid are not going to weaken their squad in January because they will be competing for silverware on all fronts, La Liga, Champions League and everything else,” the report concluded.
For Newcastle, that means exploring alternative attacking options as they seek to reinforce a squad still dealing with injuries and fixture congestion.
Newcastle’s pursuit of emerging European talent reflects its growing ambition under the ownership group, yet the challenge remains in convincing established giants to part with their future stars.
Fans on Tyneside know the recruitment team has done impressive work in recent windows, but this situation underlines the level of competition they now face. Real Madrid’s stance is understandable; few clubs would release a player thriving under a manager as meticulous as Xabi Alonso, especially one contributing with goals and assists at just the right moment in Madrid’s season.
Supporters will hope the club swiftly pivots to more realistic targets, perhaps within leagues where Newcastle can act decisively rather than compete with elite European giants. The message from Madrid is clear: they will not sell. But Newcastle’s ambitions show no sign of slowing down either.
With Premier League and European fixtures piling up, the January window must be about depth, adaptability and value. Fans will want to see smart recruitment, not desperation. Missing out on this particular Madrid talent might be a setback, but for a club with Newcastle’s trajectory, it is not a derailment.
