The Magpies have been coming under sustained pressure during the transfer window this summer, with Sandro Tonali notably lost to Tottenham Hotspur, while Bruno Guimaraes is wanted by Arsenal.

Arsenal have made a fresh move for Guimaraes and are hoping to get a deal over the line for the Brazilian, who is keen to make the move.

Newcastle could also see Joe Willock go from the engine room, with interest from Turkey and that would leave the club with even fewer options in the middle of the park.

Now the Magpies are moving to bring in a midfielder and have a fee agreed with Monaco for Bamba, according to French journalist Fabrice Hawkins.

There is ‘an agreement’ on the basis of a transfer fee of just over €40m for the 20-year-old midfielder, who has now ‘been given permission to travel’ to England to undergo a medical with Newcastle and put pen to paper to a long-term contract.

Bamba came through the youth set-up at Monaco and only made his debut at the start of last season.

He has been capped by France up to Under-20 level and Newcastle believe there is substantial room for him to grow and develop in the coming years.

Now the Magpies will want to get the move over the line as quickly as possible, with the club having proven vulnerable to deal hijacks in recent transfer windows.

Eddie Howe’s men had thought they had secured Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi, but Aston Villa hijacked their swoop.

The capture of Bamba will continue Newcastle’s push to land young and promising players this summer, with Bazoumana Traore having joined, along with Sean Steur and Ewen Jaouen.

Questions may be asked though about a lack of leadership and experience, with Kieran Trippier heading through the door, while Tonali offered a proven hand in midfield.
