Newcastle United are reported to be intensifying their pursuit of Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, with a deal considered more likely in the £55m to £64m range this summer, TeamTalk reports. The report adds clubs in Spain and Paris Saint-Germain are also keen, and that Newcastle are viewed as a more viable stepping stone if Sandro Tonali leaves, amid links with Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea in recent weeks.

Sunderland were linked with an ambitious move ahead of January and were said to have asked Monaco about a surprise deal as they sought to pair Camara with Senegal team-mate Habib Diarra at the Stadium of Light. The 22-year-old has impressed across Ligue 1 with Metz and Monaco, attracting interest from several major clubs.

“For now, I am really happy at Monaco. I’m not thinking about changing clubs but we will see what happens at the end of the season,” he told The Guardian in December.

Talk of a move to Wearside has cooled, yet Camara continues to be mentioned as a possible option for Liverpool and Chelsea.

“It's hard to say about the results in the future, I think the most important is to stay consistent. We want to become a strong club and consistent club in the top 10. I think that's really the objective, but it takes time,” said Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris, speaking on BBC Newcastle’s Total Sport earlier this week.
