The Premier League weekend closes with a compelling encounter between Newcastle and Arsenal at St James’ Park. For the visitors, the task is as much about chasing Liverpool as it is overcoming a ground that has yielded nothing since May 2023. Mikel Arteta’s side arrive knowing that a gap of eight points could separate them from the leaders by the time they kick off.

That urgency is tempered by the context of their opponent. Eddie Howe’s Newcastle have conceded only three goals so far this season, an indication of their resilience. Yet the question persists over their attacking output. The four goals scored against Bradford in midweek hinted at solutions, but with Alexander Isak no longer part of their plans, the burden remains on Howe to recalibrate his frontline.

“Two of the meanest defences in the league are set to do battle in arguably the standout fixture from England’s top-flight this weekend.” That is how it is being billed, and it feels accurate.
Newcastle vs Arsenal is scheduled for Sunday, 28 September 2025, with a 4.30pm BST start at St James’ Park.
The match will be televised live in the UK on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League, with coverage starting at 4pm BST following Aston Villa vs Fulham. Subscribers can also follow via the Sky Go app. Highlights will be available shortly after the final whistle on the Sky Sports app and YouTube, with Match of the Day covering the contest later in the evening on BBC One.
Newcastle are buoyed by the return of Anthony Gordon, who is available again after a three-game domestic suspension for his red card against Liverpool. His return adds attacking energy to a side that continues to miss Yoane Wissa, sidelined with a knee injury from international duty.

Rotation has been a theme in recent weeks but Nick Pope, Sandro Tonali, Nick Woltemade and Valentino Livramento are expected to start. Joe Willock could also feature against his former club.

Arsenal’s problems are more acute. Noni Madueke has been ruled out for several weeks with a knee injury sustained during the draw with Manchester City. Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz remain unavailable, though Bukayo Saka is fit despite a scare in the Carabao Cup. Eberechi Eze is expected to start, continuing his run of form with a goal and assist in his last two outings. Captain Martin Odegaard may also return after recovering from a shoulder issue.

Arsenal’s record on Tyneside has been poor. They have failed to score in their last three visits and Newcastle triumphed three times last season, twice at St James’ Park. Yet across history, Arsenal hold the advantage with 86 wins to Newcastle’s 72, alongside 39 draws.
This match carries the weight of Arsenal’s pursuit of Liverpool as well as Newcastle’s own ambitions to remain firmly among the top challengers in the Premier League. Given Newcastle’s occasional struggles in front of goal and Arsenal’s difficulties in this fixture, a tight and tactical contest is expected.
Prediction: Draw, 0-0.
