German defender Malick Thiaw, who recently left Milan to Newcastle United for a reported €40 million, has revealed that the decision to leave the Rossoneri was ultimately his own, citing a desire for a new challenge.

In an exclusive interview with PianetaMilan, the 24-year-old center-back reflected on his time in Italy and explained the factors that led him to the Premier League.

Why He Left Milan

While acknowledging his affection for his former club, Thiaw admitted his desire for more consistent playing time influenced his choice to leave San Siro:

“I decided to go to Newcastle. Yes, I am happy. Milan is a great club, it was difficult, but in my opinion, it was the right moment to try something new.”

Thiaw further elaborated on his playing time under his coach:

“Yes, I had three good years with Milan. In the end, I didn’t play much. Allegri had told me that I would play, but I wanted to find something new.”

Why He Joined Newcastle

When asked if the lure of the Premier League and Champions League was irresistible, Thiaw highlighted the positive reputation and incredible support system at his new club.

“I heard from Newcastle and in the end I said yes,” Thiaw stated. He also mentioned that while he didn’t speak to former Milan teammate Sandro Tonali before leaving, Tonali provided strong praise upon his arrival in England:

“[Tonali] explained to me that Newcastle is a great city, the team is great, not like Milan, but… it’s nice, the fans are incredible.”

Despite rating Newcastle’s fans highly, Thiaw remained diplomatic about the difference between the two sets of supporters: “Difficult, Milan fans are incredible.”
