Current Blues boss is on the brink after defeat to Brighton

Two former Chelsea players have been tipped to replace Liam Rosenior as Chelsea manager.

Rosenior is on the brink of the sack, less than four months after his appointment, having overseen seven defeats in the Blues’ last eight games, the latest of which coming at Brighton on Tuesday evening.

Chelsea have lost five consecutive league games without scoring a goal for the first time since 1912, the year the Titanic sank, to leave Rosenior with that sinking feeling.

Rosenior will hope to avoid the sack until at least Sunday, when Chelsea face off with Leeds at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-finals, and the bookmakers, as of Wednesday morning, are backing him to still be in the job come the start of next season.

But two former Chelsea stars are first and second favourites in the queue to take over, should the Blues board decide to take action.

Filipe Luis, Cesc Fabregas and Liam Rosenior

Filipe Luis spent one season at Stamford Bridge, having been signed during Jose Mourinho’s second spell in charge, and won the Premier League and League Cup before returning to Atletico Madrid.

He took his first steps into management with Flamengo’s Under-17s side in January 2024 but come September of the same year was in charge of the first team, where he has enjoyed plenty of success in less than 20 months, including winning the league and Copa Libertadores.

Cesc Fabregas, another Mourinho signing, is similarly turning heads in his first managerial role with Serie A side Como, who finished 10th last season and is pushing for Champions League qualification during the tail end of the current campaign. Como were playing second-division football just two years ago.

Whether either would be convinced to return to the Bridge before the end of the current season remains unclear, while Frank Lampard, who last night guided Coventry to the Championship title, is considered an outsider for a third managerial spell with the Blues.
