Neymar is expected at CT Rei Pelé on Friday to meet president Marcelo Teixeira and the Santos board, with his future still undecided. According to Globo.com, the club remains cautious over the next steps for their number 10.

He is under contract until 31 December but has not spoken publicly about his plans since Brazil’s World Cup exit to Norway in the last 16.

Inside the club there is confidence he will honour the deal for the second half of the season, though officials want a face-to-face discussion before mapping out his future.

Head coach Cuca said on Thursday night he did not yet have a timetable for Neymar, adding the staff would assess him with the medical and fitness departments to decide when he could be involved.

Talk of retirement intensified after a social media message from his father urging him to continue, but that possibility is currently considered remote.

Despite a debt of more than R$ 90 million owed by the club to NR Sports, the family company that manages his image rights, there is belief he will see out the season.

Neymar was given two weeks off after the World Cup. From Friday, Santos will begin deciding on his availability amid a busy schedule that resumed on Thursday against Botafogo in the Brasileirão. If he confirms his commitment, he faces three fronts, the league, the Copa Sudamericana and the Copa do Brasil.
