Niall Huggins has joined the PFA free agent pre-season programme as he searches for a new club ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

The PFA confirmed that 39 free agents have joined for the first week, with Huggins listed among the defenders. The scheme helps out-of-contract players maintain fitness, access professional training and showcase themselves to clubs and representatives during the summer window.

Huggins left Sunderland this summer after an injury-hit spell on Wearside. The 25-year-old arrived from Leeds United in 2021 and was highly rated, but regular fitness setbacks disrupted his time at the Stadium of Light.

When fit, he offered clear quality and versatility, able to play on either flank of the defence. His standout moment came in 2023-24, a long-range strike against Watford at the Stadium of Light that was later named Sunderland’s Goal of the Season.

Sustaining momentum proved difficult as injuries restricted his involvement across several campaigns. Sunderland did not extend his deal, with Florent Ghisolfi continuing to reshape the squad and academy pathway.

Huggins now hopes the PFA programme can help him secure his next move. He is part of a sizeable free agent group training with the organisation, and clubs can register interest in available players.
