According to L'Équipe, Nice have reached an agreement in principle to sign Axel Witsel on a one-year contract with an option for a second. The deal is well advanced, and the parties remain cautious until it is finalised.

The move follows the serious knee injury suffered by Laurent Abergel, a ruptured cruciate ligament. Witsel is a free agent after leaving Girona and could arrive as early as Monday, alongside Nathan Ngoumou.

The 37-year-old Belgium international has 140 caps and 12 goals, and featured in Belgium's most recent World Cup quarter-final, a 2-1 defeat by Spain. His career includes spells with Standard Liège, Benfica, Zenit and Dortmund.

Last season he made 32 La Liga appearances for Girona, starting most matches despite his age. That usage underlines his continued reliability in midfield.

If completed, the move would hand Le Gym an experienced operator who remained a regular last term.
