Kylian Mbappé recently praised Michael Olise as “the player of the present and the future.” The Bayern star is delighted by the praise—but remains remarkably down-to-earth.
Michael Olise is one of the French national team’s most important players at the ongoing World Cup. Following his strong debut season with FC Bayern, the 24-year-old is also impressing in the Les Bleus jersey and is increasingly taking center stage.
Consequently, he is now highly regarded within the team. France’s captain, Kylian Mbappé, recently even described his teammate as “the player of the present and the future.”
In an interview with L’Équipe, Olise was asked about the world-class star’s comment. His initial reaction was unequivocal: “That’s a huge compliment.”
Despite the high praise, however, the attacking player didn’t want to get carried away.
When asked if he agreed with Mbappé’s assessment, Olise replied with a smile, “No.”
The Bayern star made it clear that while he’s pleased by his teammate’s words, he still has a long way to go before he considers himself there.
“Of course, it’s nice to hear something like that, especially from Kylian. When someone you play with—someone you respect and who has already achieved so much in soccer—says it, you’re always happy to hear those words,” Olise explained.
The Frenchman then added a self-critical assessment: “Right now, I’d say I’m a player of the present.”
At the same time, he outlined his goals for the coming years: “If I keep working hard and stay grounded, I hope to become a player of the future as well.”
However, the attacking player’s development is currently heading in exactly that direction.

After his move to FC Bayern, Olise immediately established himself as one of Munich’s most important players and was among the team’s top performers in his first season.
He’s also making headlines at the World Cup. In the 3-1 opening-match victory over Senegal, he set up both of Mbappé’s goals and was subsequently named Man of the Match.
His strong performances have even sparked speculation about interest from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. At FC Bayern, however, there are no plans to sell him. Instead, club officials are already working on an early contract extension beyond 2029.
