Nick Woltemade said his debut for Newcastle United could hardly have gone better after scoring the winning goal against Wolves on Saturday.
The 6’6″ striker joined the Tyneside outfit from Stuttgart in the final week of the transfer window, moving for a reported £69 million including potential add-ons.
The Germany international has big shoes to fill following Alexander Isak’s departure to Liverpool. But it took him just 30 minutes to find the net in front of his new fans at St James’ Park, giving the Magpies their first win of the season in the process.
Jacob Murphy swung an inviting cross into the six yard box and Woltemade used all of his height to beat the Wolves defence to the ball.
“Great debut,” he said after the final whistle. “Can’t be better. We won and scored a goal. I’m happy about my goal. It was tough, a good game.
“Murph told me he will always get crosses in. I was ready for it.
“I didn’t know what to do [celebrating]. Can’t be a better day. I was happy and looking at the faces. To score a goal is important for a striker.
“It’s the right place to be right now. Everyone was really excited for my debut. I’m happy to make them happy.”
