Former Fiorentina and Juventus winger Nico Gonzalez has admitted that he ‘didn’t feel like himself’ during his time in Turin last season, but insists that Diego Simeone is helping to bring the best out of him now that he is in Madrid with Atletico.

Nico Gonzalez: ‘I didn’t feel like myself’ at Juventus

Nico Gonzalez spent just one season with Juventus, joining from Fiorentina on loan with an obligation to buy for a deal in the region of €33m plus bonuses last summer. He was part of a Bianconeri side that underwhelmed under Thiago Motta, prior to his sacking and the subsequent appointment of Igor Tudor.

Despite starring with Fiorentina in the seasons prior, Nico managed just three goals and two assists from 26 appearances in Serie A with the Old Lady last term, before going on to join Atletico in the summer just gone.

Nico has moved to Atleti on loan with an option to buy for a maximum of €34m, and found the net on his LaLiga debut in August.

Speaking after his side’s 5-2 victory over rivals Real Madrid on Saturday evening, Nico Gonzalez admitted: “I want to get back to playing like I did when I was at Fiorentina.”

He continued: “Simeone believes in me, gives me a lot of confidence and I’m showing what I can do on the pitch.

“I don’t want to say what went wrong at Juve. I didn’t feel like myself, but that’s football, and situations can change quickly. I’m happy here, now.”
