Before dawn in Bilbao, a morning in Madrid and late on in San Sebastián, Nico Willams crammed in treatment as he chases relief from the pubalgia that has dogged him since the start of the season. The pain has increased over the months, forcing him to halt before the problem worsened.
He is burning through every option to speed up recovery, with the World Cup now fewer than 100 days away. The situation has been handled with an unusually serious tone by Ernesto Valverde, while there is significant pain and a recent step or two backwards.
He has begun work with an external specialist on a tailored programme and will miss upcoming call-ups while his progress is assessed.
He is splitting sessions between Madrid and London with Navarrese physiotherapist Jurdan Mendigutxia, who has previously treated Sancet, Muniain and Ander Herrera with success.
Athletic’s director of football has said Nico is prepared to put the club first, yet for now the Spain international’s daily routine revolves around managing the injury.
