Nico Williams ‘could feature’ in last 16 if Spain beat Austria | OneFootball

Nico Williams’s World Cup is not over after all, with a recovery forecast of 10 or 12 days. Cadena Cope reports that the Athletic winger’s timeline is far shorter than first feared.

That would leave open the possibility of minutes in the last 16, if Spain overcome Austria in the round of 1/16.

Initially, the RFEF had not set a firm return date and his status remains subject to further assessment.

Williams expressed frustration on social media, saying the challenge that injured him was unnecessary. His brother, Iñaki Williams, called the tackle overly heavy and lamented another setback after a difficult season.

The injury comes at a delicate moment for Luis de la Fuente. Spain also lost Yeremy Pino, who suffered an acromioclavicular sprain in the same match against Uruguay. Nico, Yeremy and Víctor Muñoz are injured or being handled carefully, while Lamine Yamal has been managed for minutes.

Spain play their first knockout match on Thursday, 2 July in Los Angeles against Austria.
