Spain thought they had finally found a way through in extra time of the 2026 World Cup final on Sunday, but Nico Williams’s strike in the 96th minute was ruled out.
Moments earlier in second-half stoppage time, Argentina had been reduced to 10 men when Enzo Fernandez was dismissed at 90+3. The 25-year-old received two yellow cards, the first for dissent then another for a foul on Pau Cubarsi.
Mikel Merino was picked out inside the box, controlled and looked to finish past Emiliano Martinez. The goalkeeper parried the effort into Williams’s path and the winger turned the rebound home.
The goal did not stand because, as he controlled, Merino stepped on Nicolas Otamendi’s foot.
The decision meant the final stayed level at 0-0.
