Nearly 4 million played Mon Petit Prono during the 2026 World Cup, and someone had to finish last. That unwanted spot went to Nicolas, a 34-year-old Parisian IT specialist who stuck with the game until the end.

According to L'Équipe, he filed a prediction for every match yet got only 10 of 104 correct. He maintains he was not trying to lose, and he tends to follow football only at major tournaments.

He gambled on long shots after a friend in 2022 profited by backing major upsets, including Saudi Arabia’s 2-1 win over Argentina, a 600-point swing that lifted that friend into France’s top 10. Nicolas tried the same in the group stage and it never came off.

He landed just 6 of 72 group games. After the round of 32 he changed tack to overhaul a colleague, still missing regularly, with near calls as Argentina kept turning ties late. He had Egypt to win at 2-0 before a 2-3 loss, and went for a draw against Argentina versus Cape Verde, which finished 2-3 after extra time.

The knockouts brought only 4 correct from 32. Friends were on about 3,000 points while he hovered near 700, and he picked France to lose every game except the semi-final with Spain, where France then lost 0-2.

A late flourish saw him call Argentina’s semi-final and England’s third-place win. Days later an email from the app confirmed he was bottom of the global leaderboard on 1,093 points, which he took with a smile. He plans to return in 2030, daring others to do worse, and says he might even aim for last place again.
