Montpellier’s months-long search for fresh capital could reach a positive outcome within weeks, with a consortium in ongoing talks.
According to L'Équipe, president Laurent Nicollin said discussions are progressing but nothing has been validated, adding that he and his brother Olivier chose to open the capital to bring partners in.
The move follows economic strain in 2025 from lower TV rights, relegation to Ligue 2 and the stadium project being dropped.
Daniel Karbassiyoon and Ilkay Gündogan are among potential investors within a wider group, and Nicollin said only one consortium remains in discussions. He added that bankers had carried out checks and judged the project solid and viable.
He set a best-case late June to early July window for any official word, and would not say whether it is a capital entry or a sale, stressing it may still not happen.
A break with 50 years of Nicollin leadership is possible but too early to assert. Montpellier continue to prepare for next season in Ligue 2 and will outline the plan once documents are signed. The prospect of a deal appears increasingly realistic, contingent on a signature.
