Sunderland winger Nilson Angulo, currently sidelined, was called up by Ecuador despite his injury but will now return to the club to continue his recovery.
According to Bolavip, his inclusion was “completely surprising” and a “controversial move”, with the outlet also describing Angulo as an “undisputed starter” and “a key attacking option” when fit.
Angulo was a late omission for the Premier League game at Brighton and Hove Albion on 14 March, which ended 1-0. After the match, head coach Regis Le Bris said the issue might keep him out for four to six weeks.
Eight days later there was little prospect of him featuring in the Tyne-Wear derby against Newcastle United, yet he still appeared in Ecuador’s initial squad for friendlies against Morocco and the Netherlands.
On Thursday, Ecuador boss Sebastián Beccacece said Angulo would return to Sunderland to continue treatment on a muscle tear. Along with Independiente del Valle midfielder Patrik Mercado, he is expected to leave the national camp on Saturday and fly to England, with the coach adding the pair are significant losses and the rest of the squad are fit.
