According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland forward Nilson Angulo has been named in Ecuador’s squad for this summer’s World Cup in the US, Mexico and Canada, his first at the tournament.

The 22-year-old, capped 12 times, joined from Anderlecht for around £17.5 million in January and has been eased into Regis Le Bris’ plans.

He made nine appearances, featuring in the final three matches, and started at Everton away and Chelsea at home as the Black Cats secured Europa League qualification.

Earlier in the season, Le Bris said he thought Angulo could make a success of his time in England, while stressing he is still adapting to a new team and level. He felt the winger has the profile to be strong in the Premier League, and noted a tough day at Bournemouth drew a positive response. The head coach added that coming off the bench had suited him so far, and hoped starting would come good soon.

Ecuador’s squad also features Enner Valencia, Moises Caicedo, Piero Hincapie and Pervis Estupinan.
