Sunderland’s World Cup contingent enjoyed a standout night as Nilson Angulo scored in Ecuador’s 2-1 win over Germany, securing a knockout place.
The 23-year-old struck from range and was named player of the match, with England among Ecuador’s potential next opponents. Sunderland Echo notes the club view his form as a major positive and hope he can make a big impact next season after a January move from Anderlecht and injury recovery.
Brian Brobbey continued his run for the Netherlands, scoring again and taking man of the match in a 3-1 win over Tunisia. Netherlands topped group F and will face Morocco in the round of 32 next week.
Omar Alderete helped Paraguay draw 0-0 with Australia to clinch a final 32 berth as a best third-place qualifier. He was key again but suffered a late injury scare and will be assessed.
Simon Adingra was an unused substitute as Ivory Coast beat Curacao 2-0 to progress. Sunderland now have four different World Cup scorers, bettered only by PSG, and their six goals trail only Real Madrid’s nine.
Only Wilson Isidor is out after the group stage. Several players may miss the start of pre-season, while FIFA are compensating the club by around $5,000 per player per day.
On Friday, Habib Diarra’s Senegal must beat Iraq to keep hopes of progressing as a best third-place team alive. DR Congo’s Noah Sadiki and Arthur Masuaku also need a positive result against Uzbekistan on Sunday morning.
