Barcelona secured a vital victory against Benfica, a result that could prove crucial for the remainder of the season.
The match brought back memories of past struggles, particularly the painful encounter against Paris Saint-Germain at Montjuic.
On that occasion, Ronald Araujo’s early red card dashed Barcelona’s hopes of progressing further in the tournament.
However, this time, despite facing another early sending-off, the Catalan side managed to overcome adversity and return home with a favourable result for the second leg of the Champions League round of 16.
This triumph extends Barcelona’s unbeaten run in 2025, making them the only team across Europe’s top five leagues yet to suffer a defeat this year.
Paris Saint-Germain had also maintained an unbeaten streak until recently, but their 0-1 loss to Liverpool at the Parc des Princes put an end to that record. Now, the Blaugranas stand alone in this remarkable achievement.

Hansi Flick’s team has been in exceptional form throughout the year, playing a total of 16 matches across all competitions.
In La Liga, they have taken part in seven fixtures, three in the Copa del Rey, another three in the Champions League, and two in the Spanish Super Cup.
Out of these games, they have secured 13 victories and have been held to a draw on three occasions.
The first came against Getafe in a 1-1 stalemate at the Coliseum, the second was a 2-2 draw against Atalanta in the final group-stage fixture of the Champions League, and the most recent was the thrilling 4-4 first-leg draw against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals.
Apart from Barcelona and PSG, no other European powerhouse had managed to maintain an unbeaten record in 2025.
Bayern Munich, despite their strong form, suffered a 3-2 defeat to Feyenoord on 22 January. Bayer Leverkusen and Atletico Madrid have each lost twice, making Barcelona’s current run even more impressive.
