The England international had a good year for the Blues and was named man of the match in both the Conference League and Club World Cup finals for his match winning contributions.

Gus Poyet makes Cole Palmer Ballon d’Or claim

The start of the new campaign has been difficult for Palmer as he’s battled a groin injury that’s given him problems since the Club World Cup.

Palmer has missed Chelsea’s last two games against Brighton and Benfica and will also miss Saturday’s game with league leaders Liverpool.

Despite signing five new attackers Chelsea are still seemingly reliant on Palmer to make things happen, despite not winning a game he’s featured in this season.

Palmer has mentioned how it’s his ambition to win the Ballon d’Or and former Blue Poyet feels he needs to leave the club in order to make that a reality.

“100%, no doubt,” he told Goal.

“For me, [Jude] Bellingham when I saw him at Dortmund, I liked him a lot.

“Then his first season at Real Madrid, I love him. Why? Because he was at Real Madrid doing what he was doing, simple.

“And I thought, maybe he is the Ballon d’Or. It was a big opportunity because he was amazing his first season in Spain – he was tremendous, another dimension, another level, and that helps.

Lamine Yamal wouldn’t win the Ballon d’or if he played in England?

Poyet then went to claim Yamal wouldn’t win the award if he played in the Premier League, whilst he also believes the vote is unfair.

“Would Lamine Yamal win the Ballon d’Or if he was playing at another team, Liverpool? No chance,” he added.

“I would say that I don’t like the Ballon d’Or nominations and I don’t like the vote, I think they are not fair. The people in Spain vote for the ones that play in La Liga, the people in England vote for those in England.”
