Kylian Mbappe’s arrival was widely celebrated in the Spanish capital as the beginning of a special dynasty of forwards at Real Madrid.

Halfway into the season, however, it is Barcelona’s attacking trident that is outperforming Los Blancos’ front three and by quite some margin. In fact, Barcelona’s front three can claim to be considered the best in the world.

Miles apart

The best point of comparison to start understanding the difference in output between Barcelona and Real Madrid’s front three is the head-to-head meetings where Hansi Flick’s side have enjoyed the serious upper hand.

In the two games the Spanish heavyweights have played against each other so far this season, Barcelona have scored a stunning nine goals to Real Madrid’s two.

Of them, Barcelona’s forward trio have scored eight times while Los Blancos only have Kylian Mbappe and Rodrygo on one goal each with Vinicius Jr. firing blanks last night.

Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal all three scored in both games against Real Madrid. The first time around, it was the Polish striker with a brace and last night, the Brazilian had the honour of firing two goals.

Looking beyond head-to-head games, Barcelona’s dominance is only amplified greatly.

The Yamal-Lewandowski-Raphinha combination, after all, has scored 53 goals so far this season with the Polish striker scoring 26, the Brazilian 19 and the Spaniard eight. In comparison, Real Madrid’s front three only have 38 goals.

As a team, Barcelona average just under three goals per game and have scored an astonishing 83 goals in just 28 games so far and are Europe’s most potent attacking side even ahead of Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

Interestingly, it is also two Barcelona players who top the scoring charts in both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League – Lewandowski and Raphinha. In the Spanish Super Cup, it was Raphinha and Yamal who shared the same honour.
