Arsenal’s injury troubles deepened on Sunday after Noni Madueke (23) was forced off during the 1-1 draw with Manchester City at the Emirates. The winger, who has impressed since his £52m move from Chelsea, was withdrawn at half-time and is now undergoing assessment on a knee problem, according to Sky Sports.
Madueke had been one of Arsenal’s liveliest performers in the opening 45 minutes, testing Gianluigi Donnarumma with a sharp effort at the near post and stretching City’s back line with his direct running. But he signalled discomfort early in the game, and by the interval was seen pointing to his right knee before making his way down the tunnel with a club physio.
“He had an issue very early in the match and he wasn’t well enough to continue,” explained Mikel Arteta afterwards. His replacement, Bukayo Saka, marked his return from a hamstring layoff by slotting in on the right flank, though the England international is still building fitness.
The setback extends a worrying trend for Arsenal, who have now lost at least one player to injury in each of their Premier League fixtures this season. Kai Havertz, Martin Ødegaard, and William Saliba have all spent time sidelined, while Saka himself has only just re-emerged from his own spell out.
Arteta is expected to provide further clarity in Tuesday’s press conference ahead of the Carabao Cup tie against Port Vale. Arsenal resume league action away to Newcastle next weekend.
